The giant missile burst in a desolate area of jagged hills, gullies and boondock. Here is the El Paso Times report:Įl Paso and Juarez were rocked Thursday night when a runaway German V-2 rocket fired from the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico crashed and exploded on top of a rocky knoll three and a half miles south of the Juarez business district. When I heard the story, I think, I was in the Army Guided Missile School in Redstone Arsenal, Ala. The time frame was probably in the late 1940s or early 1950s. I wonder if you can find anything like that in the morgue. ![]() Fortunately, the missile did not carry explosives and did not hit a populated area. The story that I heard is that one of these missiles was programmed incorrectly, and when it was launched it headed south instead of north. Part of the research involved firing individual V2s and gathering data. They were sent to White Sands Missile Range, and it became the center of the army's rocket research. ![]() Army brought a lot of the German rocket scientists and quite a few of the V2 rockets that were already built to the United States.
